48 Hours Is What We Had. And Maybe What You Have to Get Away

Although a multi-day or week long trip would be great, most of us don’t have jobs where we can get away for a whole week without tapping into vacation time and boss approval. So we we made due with what we had and if it’s a couple days or a long weekend even better, you go with it. And you go!
Now that I’m an empty nester and am wallowing in the quietness and stillness in both my house and my heart, there’s a bright side: Spontaneous Travel!
My husband works in hospitality which means nights, weekends, holidays, and people in the hotel + restaurant industry work when the rest of us don’t want to. The bright side is that many times Mondays and Tuesdays, or Tuesdays and Wednesdays, he’s off. But…we don’t find out his schedule until Friday of the preceding week.
When I found out he was going to be off Tuesday and Wednesday with an afternoon start on Thursday, and I also needed to get out of my overly quiet house and overly active mind, I booked us a getaway!
I followed my own Packing Tips to Not Check a Bag and off we went!

Short, Direct Flight For the Win
It’s not even a 90 minute flight from San Diego to SFO which was perfect for us. We didn’t have time for long flights and it had to be direct. Oakland is another option. And I imagine cities like Los Angeles, Vegas, Phoenix, Salt Lake, and the Pacific Northwest are all similar flight times of ~2 hours or less.
We took a 6:30AM flight out of San Diego on Tuesday morning. It’s barbaric, I hate early flights, and you have to be willing to get up in the middle of the night (we were) to be at the airport by 5AM-ish.
Thankfully we live close the San Diego airport and we both have TSA Pre which helps. Don’t think that just because you would never take such an insanely early flight that others wouldn’t either. Wrong. There’s a whole culture of business travelers who do it routinely and/or leisure travelers on a budget since sometimes these ungodly hour flights are a bit cheaper. Make sure to allow yourself enough time at the airport.
Also, make sure to eat something that can sustain you until lunch. We did not and we were insanely hungry by late morning. See below.
